Greetings again from Tabora
I am happy to report that 10 of 11 are doing well. We've learned an important lesson about Lions today...
Actually, I'm just kidding. EVERYONE is doing well. (Note family members may start breathing now). The closest we've come to a lion are the cats that roam around our hotel.
Yesterday, we visited the Livingston Museum. This was a fortress in the late 19th century built by an Arab slave trader. When he met Livingston, he invited him to stay, but after finding out he was there to stop the slave trade, the Arab fled and Livingston took over the compound. We saw pens where slaves were kept before being marched to the sea. What might fit 20-30 uncomfortably, housed hundreds of human beings in the heat. Dan olsen tried on a slave collar that was attached to two slaves about a foot apart. We were told that a march would start with around 1,000 slaves, but as few as 1 made it to the end. The place is filled with the pain of lost souls.
We have been hard at work on the construction project. The foundation of the school dorm was completed today and we will pour the cement floor tomorrow. Fr. Dan Olsen has been lecturing daily at the Pastors' conference and the African clergy seem very interested in a western point of view.
Tomorrow, our whole group will represent the Episcopal Church USA as parishoners at the conference. Even though it is the middle of winter here it is getting hotter everyday, and we are getting more tired. The African masons work very hard, without half of the breaks we take. No wheel barrows or back hoes. Everything is carried, moved or backfilled by hand.
We are being fed well here in Tabora. We get a wide selection of food - beans, rice meat and chicken. For lunch and dinner. Everyday. Dan Good is teasing the group with images of hamburgers, cheesesteaks and desserts. George and Florence Mano pulled out real crackers and real peanut butter last night to share, which was a luxury on this trip and savored by all.
This weekend, Bishop Makaya has asked us (actually, informed us) to preach, Yes... preach to congregations in the area. We will split up in groups and go to different parishes. Some of us, other than our ordained minister, Dan Olsen will be delivering sermons. Please pray for the Tanzanian people!
That is all I have to reort tonight. We are working hard and miss you all very much. We will see you all next week and hope to send another message in few days.
In His service,
Brad & Dan Good
